How to Add Your Name and Date Next to a Signature (Text Fields Explained)

Signature, printed name and date are different entries

A signature field records the signing mark; a printed-name field makes the person's name readable; a date field records the date entered. Forms often separate these for a reason. Avoid creating one oversized signature image containing all three and laying it across several lines.

A typed cursive signature is still visually different from ordinary printed name text. Choose the field that matches what the document asks for, and use readable text for names, roles, reference numbers and dates.

Fillable fields vs text overlays

Some PDFs contain interactive form fields. Other documents only show printed boxes or underlines, and scanned pages are often images with no fields. Clicking a printed line does not automatically make it editable.

Way2Sign detects supported fillable fields when they are present. For flat pages, its text controls place an overlay on top of the page rather than editing the original sentence underneath. This distinction explains why a line can look like a form yet still require manually positioned text.

Add the entries in Way2Sign

  1. Open the supported document and locate the relevant page.
  2. Complete supported detected fields when the form provides them.
  3. Create and place your signature through Draw, Type or Upload.
  4. Use the available Name, Date or text controls in the workspace to create separate entries.
  5. Edit the value to match the form and recipient's instructions; check any reusable My Info value before applying it.
  6. Position and resize each overlay so it fits its own line without obscuring labels.
  7. Download the completed file and inspect the values and layout independently.

Control placement may differ between phone and desktop views. On mobile, open Signature Studio to access its controls rather than expecting every tool to appear at once.

Choose an unambiguous date

Use the format requested by the recipient. If none is specified, a written month or an explicit year-month-day format can reduce ambiguity between day-first and month-first conventions. Enter the intended signing date and avoid assuming that a preset is always correct.

Manually added date text is not a trusted timestamp. It does not certify when the signature was made or replace evidence required by the recipient's process.

Avoid covering or altering the underlying document

Keep entries inside their intended spaces. If a signature is too large, resize it rather than shifting it over contract wording. Do not use a white image rectangle as a redaction tool: hiding content visually is not the same as permanently removing it from the file.

If the printed form does not give enough room, ask the recipient how to handle it. Changing document wording or reducing text until it is unreadable can create ambiguity.

Save and check all fields

Inspect each page after download, including dates, initials and any values applied from saved snippets. Keep the final file sent and the relevant request. Standard local processing and optional saved or synced personal data are separate; see Privacy.

Way2Sign does not certify identity or legal validity. For a required certificate signature, notarization or managed signing invitation, follow that workflow instead of simulating its stamps with text.

Common questions

Why can I not type into a printed line?

The PDF may be flat or scanned rather than interactive. Use a text overlay when appropriate.

Is the Date button a trusted timestamp?

No. It creates date text, not an independently certified timestamp.

Can a text overlay redact private information?

No. A visual cover is not a proper redaction process and may leave underlying data accessible.
