Typed vs. Drawn vs. Uploaded Signatures: Which Should You Use?

Choose by the task, not by the fanciest appearance

The three methods place different visual marks on a document. They do not automatically create different levels of legal validity. A typed name is not inherently invalid, and a scanned signature is not inherently stronger evidence than typing.

Start with the recipient's instructions. If they require an official signing invitation or certificate-based PDF signature, none of these appearance choices replaces that requirement. For permitted visual signing, choose the option you can create clearly and consistently.

Compare the options

MethodUseful forCommon frictionPractical tip
TypedFast signing, small screens, readable namesMay not resemble your handwritingChoose a restrained style and suitable size
DrawnHandwritten appearance without a saved imageFinger, mouse or trackpad can be impreciseDraw comfortably large, then reduce the mark
UploadedReusing a clear familiar signatureImage background, low resolution, privacyUse a clean source and protect the image

For a phone, typing can avoid repeated redraws. On a device with a comfortable stylus, drawing may feel natural. Uploading works best when you already have a sharp, well-framed image rather than a dim photograph of a whole page.

How to use each method in Way2Sign

  1. Open the document and then Signature Studio.
  2. In Type, enter your signing name, select an appearance and create the signature.
  3. In Draw, make the mark on the drawing canvas, clear and retry if necessary, then create it.
  4. In Upload, choose an image containing your signature and inspect its appearance before placing it.
  5. Move the resulting overlay to the intended line and resize it without covering printed text.
  6. Download and check the exported document, not just the on-screen preview.

You only need to follow the branch for the method you choose. An uploaded file is not required if typing or drawing meets the request.

Keep the printed name separate when requested

A contract may have both “Signature” and “Printed name” lines. Put the mark on the signature line and readable name text on the printed-name line. Do the same for the date instead of forcing all three into one graphic.

Typing today's date does not create a trusted timestamp. Keep the document and the surrounding messages if timing or acceptance might matter later.

Quality and privacy considerations

Avoid enlarging a small raster signature until its edges become fuzzy. If an upload includes a white rectangle that covers the document, use a clean, tightly cropped image, ideally with an appropriate transparent background. Do not upload somebody else's signature or reuse it on a new agreement.

Store reusable signature images privately. They can be copied like other images, so their familiar appearance is not proof that the named person signed. On shared devices, manage downloads and saved personal snippets carefully.

What determines acceptance?

Recipient policy, document requirements and applicable law determine whether a method is suitable. Read the contract-validity guide for the difference between appearance and signing evidence. Way2Sign provides visual signatures; it does not certify identity, notarize or issue digital signing certificates.

Common questions

Is a drawn signature more legally valid than a typed one?

There is no universal rule that handwriting is legally stronger. Applicable requirements, intent and evidence matter.

Which method is best on a phone?

Typing is often easiest, while drawing or uploading can suit a required handwritten appearance.

Can I upload a photo of my signature?

Yes, if it is your signature and a supported image. Use a clear, tightly cropped source and check the exported result.
